Matthias Esch

Born 1988 Andernach (Germany)
Lives and works in Berlin

Matthias Esch's studied in Kassel, Antwerp, Berlin and Glasgow where he gained his MFA in 2018. His paintings, are reduced to geometric ornaments and structures, his aim is to find an expression outside the concrete, precisely when words fail. The formal reduction in Esch's work is an expression of the moment when language and its semantics fail and must be operated with the help of other symbols and signs. Driven by his mistrust of language, he designs subjective systems that convey a metaphysical feeling rather than a message. The attempt to create universal images through geometric abstraction is a highly personal process stemming partly from his experiences with autism in the family environment. He has shown extensively in both the UK and Europe, including Fling Project III at Tramway, Glasgow 2019, Attitudes at LM gallery, Latina, Italy 2018, and a solo show at Sox Gallery Berlin in 2019 – Like the Ocean Does.
